Term 1 Halfway Point

Believe it or not, this Friday is the halfway point of Term 1. It's a great time for students to communicate with their teachers about their progress and for parents and teachers to connect, if necessary. Progress reports will be emailed home on Friday, Oct. 16....Check Edline reports on Friday as well.

Important questions for students:

1. "Are you working as hard as you can?"

2. "Are you seeking out help from your teachers and your classmates as way to improve?"

3. "Do you have good routines to get your academic work completed in a thoughtful way?"

4. "How can we help you?"

Late Bus

The Late Bus is running on Mondays and Thursdays. Pick up is at 3:15 p.m. in the Rodman Loop.

Afterschool Academic Support

The Canton High School Library is open from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Thursday. We also have two staff members available in the library during this time for academic support. We hope that students take advantage of this space and support.

Canton High School Logo

Former CHS teacher and current Citizen editor Jay Turner wrote an amazing article about the new
CHS logo, the process of its development and its symbolism. Check out the link below. Jay did make his return to CHS this past Friday as a guest speaker in Pat Murphy's publishing class.

Additionally, I am providing a link about Lengendary sporstwriter Bob Ryan, who has written a new book: Scribe: My Life in Sports. He will be visiting the Canton Library on Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. As a journalism major, I have read Bob Ryan faithfully since high school; he is an important voice in our era. Two friends of mine attended this talk at a Plainville bookstore, and they said his sport stories and his insight are priceless. With our focus on literacy and reading, I wanted to promote this unique opportunity. I would love to attend this event, but our girls and boys soccer teams are playing at Gillette Stadium on this night. Another amazing and unique opportunity.

Cinderella Drama Club trip / Thank You Rodman Family!

The Rodman family often makes generous donations, especially in the area of performing arts. On Thursday, Oct. 1, they sent 20 students and staff to see Cinderella. The family often buys and donates blocks of tickets for two to three productions a year. The Drama Club and CHS (as a whole) is so grateful for these wonderful experiences.

Stay tuned for Don Rodman's new book, inspired by the Rodman Ride for Kids, about the importance of giving back.

SAVE the DATE: The Fall Play -- Marvin's Room -- will be Nov. 13 & 14.

Bulldogs vs. Panthers at the Providence College Rink

Canton's Kevin Rooney has been named one of the captains for the defending national champion Providence Friars men's hockey team. Here is a link to the story: Canton's Rooney named captain.

There is an additional connection to Providence College this year. After our Ponky Rink collapsed earlier this year, Providence College men's hockey representatives (many with Canton connections) reached out to our coach Brian Shuman and our CHS athletic department. They offered the PC rink for a home game....Fast forward...The Canton Bulldogs will be playing Hockomock rival Franklin at the Providence College rink on Dec. 18. Get your popcorn ready.

German Exchange Students have arrived

Our friends from Bocholt, Germany arrived safely at Logan Airport on Saturday. They are getting settled with their host families today and will visit the State House on Monday. On Tuesday, they will meet at CHS and start shadowing some of our students and your classes.

CHS Soccer Teams at Gillette Stadium

Our boys and girls soccer teams will be playing Mansfield this Wednesday at Gillette Stadium. Just an amazing experience for our soccer programs, our student-athletes and our fans. For the last couple of years, Gillette has offered opportunities for high school teams (usually soccer and lacrosse) to play at the stadium. The Mansfield and Canton Athletic Departments worked hard to make this happen. See Danny Erickson if you would like to buy tickets and support the Bulldogs.  For more details, see the Canton Athletics Blog. Follow @cantonathletics

Guidance Blog / Redesigned SAT

Lots of great things happening in the Guidance Department. Recently, Guidance hosted a morning coffee with parents of senior to discuss the college planning process. Very well attended and very well received. Bookmark the Guidance Blog

This Thursday, we have a representative from Quantum Test Prep making a presentation about the Re-designed SAT and PSAT at 7:30 p.m. This is critically important info as it goes into effect Spring 2016. We just administered the SATs this weekend at CHS and all schools are getting ready for this change -- a real upgrade.

Athletic Events and MIAA App

Curious about who is playing and when....Download the MIAA app for free. Identify Canton as a "favorite" and you will have access to all of the schedules, results and standings. You can even download events into your calendar. Excellent app.

Breakfast Reaches 100

We reached a milestone this week....I forget which day it was, but we had 101 students buy breakfast! It's the first time we topped 100. In the early days, we we were always hoping to get 35. I'm so happy many of our students are taking advantage of this opportunity. Food Service Director Martha Lawless and CHS director Donna Scott do a wonderful job preparing our students for the day. For $1.50, the students can get a full breakfast!

SAVE the Date:
Oct. 13 -- Dr. Muse's presentation on Concussions and Addiction, 7 p.m.
