Cultivating Creativity!

Special Art Show: April 11, 10 am to 3 pm, Pequitside Farm
At times, challenges can open a new door, a new opportunity. Cultivating Creativity is a perfect example. Due to the high volume of snow, Artists in Bloom -- a very successful connection between Canton student arts and community members -- had to be canceled. But the K-12 Visual Arts Department told the students (whose artwork was selected) that their art would be displayed in a special event -- and Cultivating Creativity was born.

The art show will feature selected work from:

1 student from each elementary classroom in each school
2 students from each GMS art class
Curricular examples from each studio area at CHS

Approximately 180-200 artworks from grades 1-12 will be on display. Additionally, the students wrote about their artwork and the writing is exhibited with their pieces.

If you have a moment, stop by and see the work of our talented students.

MCAS Exam Schedule

Attention Parents/Guardians of

Grade 9 and Grade 10 students:

As we head into mid-March, I am writing to remind parent/guardians of Grade 9/10 students of the MCAS exam schedule. To earn a Canton High School diploma, all students must pass the English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics and Science MCAS exams. Grade 9 students take the Biology Exam in June and Grade 10 students complete the ELA and Math Exams in March/April and May, respectively.

With the importance and impact of MCAS in mind, student attendance and punctuality on exam days is a high priority. Additionally, I want to discourage the scheduling of appointments on these exam days since dismissals are problematic. Once a student starts the MCAS testing, he or she must finish the section to completion. A student cannot start the exam, be dismissed and come back to restart the exam.  Since I have run into this issue in the past, I want to be up front with this information before the testing season starts.

I am certain that our students will be 100 percent prepared for the exams and will continue to perform in exemplary fashion. During our preparation, we will make sure that the testing environment is ideal for the students and conducive to academic excellence.

As always, I appreciate your help and support.

ELA Exams -- Grade 10
Tuesday, March 31 -- ELA Session 1 and 2
Wednesday, April 1 -- ELA Session 3
Thursday, April 2 -- ELA Composition

Mathematics Exams -- Grade 10
Tuesday, May 19 -- Math Session 1
Wednesday, May 20 -- Math Session 2

Biology Exams -- Grade 9
Tuesday, June 9 -- Biology Session 1
Wednesday, June 10 -- Biology Session 2

If you have any questions regarding MCAS, please contact Assistant Principal Henry McDeed at mcdeedh@cantonma.org

Welcome CHS World Language to the Twitter World. Follow @cantonworldLang

Sign up for Twitter today...www.twitter.com

Between the weather and the many school events, Twitter is the "go to" means of instant communication. Additionally, if you "turn on notifications" for someone you follow -- the school tweets for example -- the tweets will pop up on your phone like a text.

If you need help setting up notifications on Twitter, I would start with your sons and daughters. They know every aspect of Twitter. If they are stumped, then send me an email at foland@cantonma.org

Term 3 Progress Reports

Friday, March 6 was the halfway point of the revised Term 3 schedule. Term 3 Progress Reports will be emailed home on Thursday, March 12. The Progress reports will likely say "see Edline reports"...If your son/daughter is struggling, there will be a comment in relation to a low grade.

Why are the Progress Reports necessary? Why not just post Edline grade reports? The Progress Report comment serves as a "head's up" to parents about a student's problematic academic standing and it provides the school with a list of students who are at-risk of failing a course.

If you need help accessing Edline, please contact Doreen Shea at shead@cantonma.org.

Term 3 midway point: Friday, March 6
Term 3 progress reports: Thursday, March 12
Term 3 ends: Thursday, April 9
Term 4 begins on Friday, April 10*

Tickets: $10 adults/$8 students, seniors & staff
Enjoy the show and support our students!

The Miracle Worker, the classic play by William Gibson, tells the story of Annie Sullivan (played by Isabelle Hegland) and her student, blind and mute Helen Keller (played by Izzy Johnson).  The Miracle Worker dramatizes the volatile relationship between the lonely teacher and her charge.  Trapped in a secret, silent world, unable to communicate, Helen is violent, spoiled, almost sub-human and treated by her family as such.  Only Annie realizes that there is a mind and spirit waiting to be rescued from the dark, tortured silence.  With scenes of intense physical and emotional dynamism, Annie;s success with Helen finally comes with the utterance of a single, glorious word: "water."
