A Blizzard of Events

Over 2 feet of snow. Blizzard conditions. Two snow days. Plus, the excitement and urgency of a week leading up to February vacation. What an amazing couple of weeks! And through it all, CHS students took part in a flurry of great events and continued to achieve at a high level.

Mock Trial

Objection!
The Canton High School Mock Trial Team completed a successful season with wins over the Foxboro Charter High School and Medfield High School. In its final trial, CHS lost to Westwood in a close a case.

The CHS Mock Trial Team                                           Cameron Boyce photo
Throughout the season, which runs from October to March, the thirteen CHS students on the Mock Trial Team gained valuable experience as attorneys and actors/actresses in a court setting. Additionally, they learned about the law, legal strategy, and teamwork and enhanced their critical-thinking, public speaking and problem-solving skills.

This year's mock trial was a criminal case involving a great nephew who was accused of poisoning his great aunt and murdering her before she changed her will. He allegedly poisoned her with her own medication and attempted to make it look like a heart attack. She was a wealthy widow and the nephew was due to inherit millions.

Local attorneys volunteer their time to serve as judges and hear the cases. A mock trial team is judged on the merits of its case and additionally on the performance of the roles. The competitions are held at Stoughton District Court and Brockton District Court.

CHS had six attorneys on the team and six witnesses to portray the characters in the case. Canton represented the defendant against Foxboro Charter High School and recorded wins on both counts. Against Medfield, CHS represented the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (prosecution) and scored a successful conviction and won the performance.

Special thanks to advisor-coach Mrs. Bauman and volunteer attorney coaches Steve Bauman, Andrew Kepple and Brian Pariser for their countless of hours of practice, advice and guidance. The Mock Trial Team is getting stronger and stronger...See Mrs. Bauman if you are interested in joining.

Be My Valentine

CHS students visit the Senior Center

On Valentine's Day, Mr. Amico's Career Planning class visited the Canton Senior Center to deliver carnations to the seniors. The kind gesture and the good company were greatly appreciated. Many multi-generational conversations took place and it was a great learning experience for the students and the Canton residents.

Mr. Amico's Career Planning Class
A highlight of the visit was "The challenge" -- one of the seniors and junior Matt Kelly engaged in a friendly game of billiards for bragging rights. Let's just say the senior played the role of wily veteran and defended his turf. With a big smile, Kelly was humble in his defeat.

The seniors loved the carnations.

MCAS Exam Schedule

Attention Parents/Guardians of

Grade 9 and Grade 10 students:

As we head into February vacation, I am writing to remind parent/guardians of Grade 9/10 students of the MCAS exam schedule. To earn a Canton High School diploma, all students must pass the English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics and Science MCAS exams. Grade 9 students take the Biology Exam in June and Grade 10 students complete the ELA and Math Exams in March and May, respectively.

With the importance and impact of MCAS in mind, student attendance and punctuality on exam days is a high priority. Additionally, I want to discourage the scheduling of appointments on these exam days since dismissals are problematic. Once a student starts the MCAS testing, he or she must finish the section to completion. A student cannot start the exam, be dismissed and come back to restart the exam.  Since I have run into this issue in the past, I want to be up front with this information before the testing season starts.

I am certain that our students will be 100 percent prepared for the exams and will continue to perform in exemplary fashion. During our preparation, we will make sure that the testing environment is ideal for the students and conducive to academic excellence.

As always, I appreciate your help and support.

ELA Exams -- Grade 10
Tuesday, March 19 -- ELA Composition
Thursday, March 21 -- ELA Session 1 and 2
Friday, March 22 -- ELA Session 3

Mathematics Exams -- Grade 10
Monday, May 13 -- Math Session 1
Tuesday, May 14 -- Math Session 2

Biology Exams
Tuesday, June 4 -- Biology Session 1
Wednesday, June 5 -- Biology Session 2

If you have any questions regarding MCAS, please contact Assistant Principal Henry McDeed at mcdeedh@cantonma.org

Wednesday, Feb. 13
The following notice is from the Superintendent's recent newsletter.
PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT ON ENHANCED LOCKDOWN PROTOCOLS, 7 p.m. in CHS Cafeteria

A parent information night on the District's enhanced lockdown protocols will be held on Wednesday, February 13 at 7 PM in the high school cafeteria.  Chief Berkowitz and Detective Yeaton from the Canton Police Department will join Superintendent Jeff Granatino in updating parents on the ongoing enhancements to our current lockdown procedures.

The idea of enhanced lockdowns has been looked at by the Canton Police for some time and this topic was discussed at two School Committee meetings over the past few months.  After a recent presentation to the School Committee by Chief Berkowitz and Detective Yeaton, it was decided that the District will continue to educate and train staff in these new protocols.  Once the staff has completed their training, students will be presented with the new protocols in age-appropriate fashion.  Prior to that happening, however, we wanted to give parents an overview of what these enhancements will entail.

All are welcome.

A Jazzy Night at CHS

Thanks to the creative efforts of our performing arts staff, students and parent volunteers, the CHS cafeteria was transformed into a Jazz Cafe for the Canton High School and the Galvin Middle School Small Ensemble Concert last Thursday.

The event featured the CHS Jazz Ensemble and Vocalmotion, the 7th and 8th grade Jazz Band, Jazz Lab and the 6th grade Jazz Band. The performances were amazing and featured a variety of numbers that showcased our talented students. In particular, the high school and middle school students performing collaboratively at the end was a highlight for many.

The atmosphere, which included special lighting, food, dining tables and great acoustics, made it a terrific experience for all who attended. Well done!

CHS student Daniel Guan captured the following photos.
