The following letter was sent home.
Dear Parent/Guardian,

Distracted driving is something that affects us all but is proving to be especially dangerous for young inexperienced drivers. If you’re a parent of a newly licensed (0-3 years) or permitted driver, it must worry you — and it definitely worries us.

I’m pleased to tell you that the Arbella Insurance Group Charitable Foundation, Inc. (“Arbella”), and Dowling Insurance Agency are doing something to help stop this growing problem. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 80 percent of crashes and 65 percent of near-crashes involved some form of driver inattention. Arbella not only sponsors research in this area but also has created a mobile training tour designed to show teens exactly how dangerous it is to drive distracted. The University of Massachusetts, Amherst, participated in the sponsored research project and created the driving simulations. This tour is called Distractology 101 and is offered to newly licensed (0-3 years) or permitted drivers free of charge.  www.distractu.com

The training is 45 minutes of instructional learning behind the wheel of a simulator console. Your teen will get a firsthand experience of how distractions interfere with their ability to react on the road, see hidden hazards and avoid accidents while safely behind the wheel of a driving simulator. It’s real. It’s useful and it’s memorable.

It makes us very proud to be able to offer this to the community. It’s not every day we get to help save a life.

Yours truly,
