I wanted to send a quick note to just let you know that I am watching the same forecasts you are and it appears we could be faced with some significant snowfall starting Monday night and going through Wednesday.  While it is too early to predict with 100% certainty, I suggest you have contingency plans in place for childcare in case we have to alter any school days.

As always, before making any decisions, I will consult with our highway officials, along with the police and fire department, to determine what the most appropriate steps will be with regards to the safety of our children and staff.  If and when decisions are made, I will communicate with you as early as possible so you can plan accordingly. 

Final decisions will be communicated through telep hone messages as well as postings on our district website (www.cantonma.org) and via twitter @CantonSuper

Term 3 begins on Monday, January 26
Nothing beats a fresh start. Term 3 begins on Monday, January 26. It marks the halfway point for the school year and it also serves as Day 1 of Semester 2 classes. Students are encouraged to engage in their new classes while continually improving in their year-long courses. A couple of reminders for the start of Term 3/Semester 2.

1. Homeroom on Monday, January 26 -- Term 3 schedules will be distributed.

2. Any student who has a physical education course on Monday will be expected to change for the first class.

3. Students in yoga class are strongly encouraged to bring their own yoga mat. It can be stored at school.

4. The timeline for Term 2 report cards will be contingent on the weather this week. I will keep parents and students in the loop as we make adjustments due to the storm.

5. Nothing beats hard work, critical thinking and a desire to improve. Seek extra help if you want to excel.

CALENDAR AND EVENTS

MONDAY, JANUARY 26

(The following two events are contingent upon the weather.)

CHS Monthly Parent Meeting, 5 p.m.

You are invited to the monthly parent meeting on Monday, January 26, from 5-6 p.m., in the CHS Library. We will be discussing the CHS Program of Studies, course selection and a parent survey.

FAFSA workshop, 6-8 p.m.

For those parents/guardians who signed up by Jan. 22...The American Student Assistance College Planning Services will be hosting a FAFSA workshop at CHS.  Parents/Guardians will have hands on help completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Participants will need to bring their 2013 tax return or 2014 (if filed). This is a great opportunity to have experts help you with completing the FAFSA.

Thursday, JANUARY 29 

The CHS Link Leaders are hosting an activity for students who have transferred to Canton High School. CHS takes great pride to help our students transition to Canton's culture and expectations. This is the second Link Leader activity for transfer students this year. Thank you Link Leaders.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 30 

The CHS Link Leaders are hosting a workshop for Grade 9 students around the topics of identity and diversity. Ms. Kelly, CHS English teacher, is helping coordinate the event with her American Identities class. This is a key workshop for an inclusive school and furthering our understanding of one another and different perspectives.

Wednesday, Feb. 4 -- 1/2 Day Professional Development Day. Students are dismissed at 10:30.

Thursday, Feb. 5 -- School Committee, 7 p.m. in the Distance Learning Lab

Transition Planning for Middle School and High School Students

Massachusetts law requires Transition planning to begin at age 14. Coordinated transition preparation promotes better post school outcomes for students with disabilities. This workshop addresses the development of self-advocacy and self-determination skills to support a student’s vision, how Transition Assessments identify students’ strengths, and how the Transition Planning Form guides planning for meaningful opportunities in education, training, employment and independent living.  

CPACSS team member Tracie Pustizzi sent this notice as well:

I wanted to reach out and get a count of how many families would like to take part in the IEP Clinic...Experienced advocates will come look over your child's IEP with you FREE of charge.   These advocates are from the Federation for Children with Special Needs.  I am working out the details now and want to get as many advocates as we need scheduled for that night... which is planned for March 11th 5-8 time frame.  You would be allotted one hour slots... Please respond back as soon as possible if you want to take part in this opportunity.

To Senior Rob Dicalogero...for recently earning this 100th win as a CHS wrestler. Rob has been four-year varsity member of the Bulldog wrestling team and this achievement is a testament to his hard work and success over his career. Well done.

Helpful Hints from the Bullying Prevention Team

What can you do to protect your kids online?

Talk to them.  Talk early and often, create an honest and open environment, communicate your values, and be patient.  Research suggests that when children want important information, most rely on their parents.  When your kids begin to socialize online, you may want to talk to them about certain risks:

·  Inappropriate conduct: The online world can feel anonymous.  Kids sometimes forget that they are still accountable for their actions.

· Inappropriate contact:  Some people online have bad intentions, including bullies, predators, hackers, and scammers.

· Inappropriate content: You may be concerned that your kids could find pornography, violence, or hate speech online.

You can reduce these risks by talking to your kids about how they communicate – online and off and encouraging them to engage in conduct they can be proud of.
