Distractology makes a powerful impact
State-of-the-art experience teaches
CHS students valuable lessons
Nicole Nachef photo |
Using state-of-art video modules, students learned about the negative effects of driving while distracted. They faced many different everyday scenarios.
Texting. Cell phone calls. Fooling around with friends. Reaching for an item on the car floor. Looking in the mirror to check your appearance. Eating. Changing the radio station.
Nicole Nachef photo |
The students spoke very highly of Distractology 101, stating it was a good experience that made them think about their driving habits and the importance of paying attention on the road. In striving to develop responsible young adults who make good decisions, Canton High School hopes every lesson from the simulation transfers to the real world of driving. We want our students to be safe.

4th Annual Scott Herr Memorial
Floor Hockey Tournament
Students organize another great event to remember and honor Scott Herr
Amazing things happen when you empower students. Even more so, their compassion for a fellow student and family is unparalleled.
For the 4th straight year, CHS students organized the Scott Herr Memorial Floor Hockey Tournament to compete, have fun and honor the legacy of Scotty Herr. This year, senior Kelly Bradley and sophomore Caitlin Hutchinson stepped up and coordinated the fundraiser, which benefits the Scott Herr Foundation. A 2009 CHS graduate, Scott Herr tragically died in a car accident.

"It's important not to forget him," Bradley said. "He's a classmate. [The floor hockey tournament] is a tradition that we need to keep going."
Hutchinson added, "My brother (John) ran the tournament before he graduated, so I wanted to do the same. It's a good way to keep (Scott's) memory alive -- to remember and honor him. It keeps all of us together."
14 Teams filled the CHS gymnasium during the week of March 11-15, and each day students played pick-up floor hockey games with the enthusiasm and excitement of, well, kids. The staff supervised, but really stayed out of the way. In an old-school way, the students created a competitive environment with tons of laughs and great moments.
The Championship Team -- Anthony Franscescon, Billy Hines, Ben Lodge, Eric Wong, Andrew Howlett, Sam Hrubec -- took home the tourney title with a 4-3 win in overtime.
On Friday, March 15, the Championship Team battled the Faculty Team, headed by MVP goalie Leo Nelson. At the end of a hard-fought game, the students once again prevailed with a 6-4 win over a slightly fatigued faculty crew. Everyone was so pleased to see Joe and Linda Herr stop by and watch the game. Their smiles were priceless and they thanked all involved.
"It's a good way to get all the students together and unified for a great cause," Franscescon said. "We had fun. It's really meaningful for the [Herr family]."
Scott Herr grew up in Canton, attended Canton Schools and played many sports. He was an extremely kind young man, always putting others first. Passionate about hockey, Scott experienced the highlight of his CHS career with a trip to the MIAA state championship game in 2009. The Bulldogs came up just short.
After graduating from Canton High School, Scott went on to study at Northeastern University. That winter break, he was killed in a tragic car accident.
Just months later, the CHS boys hockey team made a return trip to the Boston Garden in honor of Scotty, and this time the Bulldogs won the 2010 Division 2 State Championship.
Scott's family -- his mom Linda, dad Joe and brother Joey -- established a fund in his memory and have been raising money for scholarships every since. In 2010, CHS opened the Scott Herr Fitness Center, a state-of-the-art fitness center open to all CHS students. The room was funded by an anonymous donation in Scott's memory.
The 2013 Faculty Team with Joe and Linda Herr. Faculty team members included: Derek Folan, Jacques Fabian, Jim Goff, Kelley Blake, Leo Nelson and Ben Stitch. Goalie Leo Nelson earned MVP honors. |

Canton High School Drama Presents...
I Never Saw Another Butterfly
Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16
7 p.m. in the CHS Auditorium
Tickets are $8 Students/Seniors, $10 Adults
The stories of the children who passed through Terezin remain in drawings and poems collected and published in the book I Never Saw Another Butterfly. The appendix to I Never Saw Another Butterfly briefly notes the names of the children, the dates of their birth and transportation to Terezin. For most of the children whose work appears in the book, the brief biography ends, “perished at Auschwitz…”
But one child, Raja Englanerova, “after the liberation, returned to Prague.” This play is an imaginative creation of her story from documentary materials: poems, diaries, letters, journals, drawings and pictures. -- Stephanie Shapiro, CHS Drama Director

What is Distractology 101?
A Crash Course on Distracted Driving
CHS students will learn about the dangers of texting and driving during a free training program, sponsored by Arbella and Dowling Insurance
So what exactly is Distractology 101?
That was the key question at today's Junior/Senior assembly about the dangers of distracted driving and the importance of being safe behind the wheel.
Students received words of caution, concern and care from Police Chief Ken Berkowitz, Fire Chief Charlie Doody, School Resource Office (SRO) Detective Chip Yeaton and Canton K-12 Wellness Coordinator Katey Swanson. They emphasized the CHS social expectations of being responsible young adults and making good decisions, while also addressing the deadly impact of driving and texting (and other distractions) on our lives.
Their genuine statements and anecdotes will be enhanced by Distractology 101 -- a free training program that features a video simulator. On Sunday, March 17, the large yellow Distractology trailer will arrive and it will be remain on campus during the week of March 18-22.
Seniors and juniors who have their licenses or permits have the opportunity to sign up this week. All necessary information is included in the following Distractology 101 press release:
The Distractology 101trailer |
Seems like every day, we hear about teens dying behind the
wheel because of texting and driving.
Distracted driving is something that affects us all but is proving to be
especially lethal for young inexperienced drivers. If you’re a parent of a newly licensed or
permitted driver, it must worry you – and it definitely worries us.
That’s why we are excited to tell you about Distractology
101, a free training being offered by the Arbella Insurance Group Charitable
Foundation, Inc. (“Arbella”) and Dowling Insurance Agency. Distractology 101 is a mobile simulator designed
to train and educate new drivers on the dangers of distracted driving. The University of Massachusetts, Amherst
created the simulations used in the Arbella trainings. When we heard about this
great program, we knew we had to become involved and volunteered to host the
tour at our school!
The training is 45 minutes of instructional learning behind
the wheel of a simulator console. In
addition, students are asked to complete a reinforcement web based training
which can be completed from any computer.
Any driver licensed three years or less or has their permit is eligible
for this free training. Your teen will
get firsthand experience of how distractions interfere with his or her ability
to react on the road, see hidden hazards and avoid accidents all while safely
being behind the wheel of a driving simulator.
It’s real. It’s useful. It’s memorable.
But it will only be
at Canton High School between Monday,
March 18th and Friday, March 22nd.
• Students
must have a learner’s permit or a license for less than 3 years
• Scheduled
appointments will be either during their
study or Wellness class, or after school
• How
to schedule an appointment:
• Registration will take place during all 3
lunches March 13th and 14th.
• Seniors
only on Wednesday March 13th registration
• Juniors
and Seniors on Thursday March 14th
• Students
must bring their license/permit and class schedule with them to make an
appointment
• First
come, first serve, if they have everything with them!
Each student
participating in Distractology 101 will receive a $15 gas card
It makes us very proud to be able to offer this to our
students. It’s not every day we get to
help save a life. I urge you to take
advantage of this rare opportunity to educate your teen and keep him or her
safe.
