A Memo from the Superintendent:
Changes in Bus Arrival Times Effective December 7!
Dear Parents and Guardians:
As you are aware, in September, we made several route changes for our school buses following the altered start and end times of the five Canton Public Schools. Two major changes included reducing the number of tiers from four to three and expanding the number of buses per tier from fourteen (14) to twenty (20).
Since then, we have been carefully monitoring school bus transportation and have noticed many of our buses arriving too early to our schools. The school administrators have expressed concern, and many of you have brought this issue to our attention as well. Therefore, we will be moving the morning pick up times slightly later so the buses arrive at the schools closer to the start of classes.
The updated Bus List and Times have been sent to you via Blackboard Connect and will also be sent at least two times more by your building principals. Please adjust your child’s bus pick up time later by the number of minutes in the column labeled “# of Minutes Later.” (See the chart below.)
The changes will be effective on Monday, December 7, 2015.
Please note there will no changes to the afternoon bus routes.
Please note there will no changes to the afternoon bus routes.
If you have any questions, please call Leslie Tamarkin, at 781-821-5060 X1156.
Thank you.
Thank you.

Term 1 Closes on Friday, Nov. 13
Believe it or not, Term 1 closes on Friday, Nov. 13. Our students have worked extremely hard for the first nine weeks of school. During recent announcements and throughout class lessons, we have emphasized the importance of one's work ethic, active learning and resiliency. We have
emphasized the importance of maximizing every moment of the school day.
The end of a school term always brings a focus on grades. We certainly encourage students to finish strong and achieve the highest grade possible. But we encourage the students to consider their level of learning and thinking, to consider their growth, and to consider their ownership of their own learning. Great grades and -- more importantly -- great learning will be achieved if students strive to be better in their areas.
As I told the students today, Term 2 provides a fresh opportunity to improve on Term 1. Continuous Improvement is one our Core Values!
Here are some key dates:
Friday, Nov. 13 -- Term 1 closes
Monday, Nov. 16 -- Term 2 begins, Homeroom at 8 a.m.

Marvin's Room
Friday, Nov. 13 & Saturday, Nov. 14, 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 14, 2-4 p.m.
Tickets: $10
(Students: $5 pre-sale; $10 at the door)
**MARVIN'S ROOM is rated PG-13 for mild strong language and adult themes.**
THE STORY: Bessie lives in Florida where she cares for her pain-ridden aunt and ailing father, Marvin, who is confined to his bed and unable to speak. When Bessie is diagnosed with leukemia, her only hope is to contact her long-estranged sister, Lee, to see if their bone marrow is compatible for a transplant. Lee reluctantly makes the trip from Ohio, bringing along her two sons, one of whom, Hank, has just been released from an institution after a wave of arson. The sisters’ reunion is uneasy at best, with long buried recriminations coming to the surface even as love slowly overwhelms Lee's veneer of selfishness and glib denial. Bessie's challenge becomes reuniting Lee and Hank before he rejects her completely for her years of neglect. Beloved for its mordant humor and unflinching wisdom, Scott McPherson’s dark comedy allows us a moving view of one woman’s commitment to family and response to despair.
Winner of the 1991–1992 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, the 1991–1992 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Play, the John Gassner Award for Best New American Play, and the 1991 Dramatists Guild Hull-Warriner Award.
"When the American theater gains [a] voice this original, this unexpected, you really must hear it for yourself. What separates MARVIN’S ROOM from so many synthetic American plays…is that even at its occational sunniest, it never lies or sentimentalizes the truth. Mr. McPherson does not pretend that people always die with dignity, either, or that everyone isn’t dying. Instead he asks, What good can we do with the time, however much or little it is, that we have left before our inevitable harsh fate arrives?…My first impulse after seeing Mr. McPherson’s play was to gather those I care about close to me and take them into MARVIN’S ROOM so that they, too, could bask in its bouncing, healing light." —NY Times.
"…written with a blazing, tender accuracy that grips you with the force of revelation…" —Village Voice. "…the themes of death, love, duty, care and service are frugally intertwined in a play of considerable emotional resonance. Laughing one minute, we are shuddering with a stealthy empathy the next. Death has rarely seemed more interesting or love so complex." —NY Post.

Term 1 Progress Reports
Term 1 Progress Reports will be emailed home on Friday, October 16. The Progress Report will likely prompt you to check your son or daughter's grades on Edline. If you need help with Edline or need an account set up, please contact Doreen Shea at shead@cantonma.org.
As a reminder, progress reports are an approximate reflection of a student's academic standing. We are placing greater emphasis on learning, growth and work ethic, rather than simply grades. But it is very important to know your son or daughter's academic standing, and Progress Reports can open lines of communication with students, parents and teachers.
Students are always encouraged to make effective use of their classroom time and studies, afterschool help with their teachers and the Afterschool Academic Center in the library afterschool. There is no trick to school -- learning takes a great amount of work and a willingness to move out of your comfort zone. If there are subjects and/or assessments that are challenging, we hope our students have the resiliency and resources to get better each day.

Daily Announcements Available on CHS Website
The Canton High School Daily Announcements, which encompass upcoming club meetings, practice and rehearsal updates, and school events, are read each day at the start of the lunch block. The Daily Announcements are now available on the CHS website under the link "Daily Announcements." The Google Doc will feature the week's announcements for students, parents and staff to review.
PSAT administration at Canton High School
For the first time ever, Canton High School will be administering the PSAT to juniors and sophomores during the school day on Wednesday, October 14. We currently have 335 students taking the exam.
The College Board, who oversees the PSATs, SATs and AP exams, made a decision to only administer the PSATs on two Wednesdays in October. (Schools had to pick one of the two.) In the past, schools had the option of Wednesday or Saturday ad
ministrations. CHS, like many schools, had always done the PSATs on a Saturday. Other schools made it part of their school day. This year, we had no choice. I do not know if this administration structure is a one-year trial or a permanent move, but we will do our best to keep in contact with the College Board and stay informed.
Logistically, the PSAT administration during the school day will be a challenge, but Assistant Principal Mr. McDeed and Guidance Director Dr. Chamberland have a good plan, and they have reserved the classrooms in C Building.
Grades 9 and 12 will experience a normal school day (with the first three periods adjusted slightly), but they will have their English and World Language classes in a different classroom. Grade 10 and 11 students not taking the PSAT will have a different classroom as well.
It is our goal to ensure a great testing environment for students involved in the PSATs and to preserve a solid school day for all of the other students. It's not going to be easy, but we will do our best.
Over 100 parents/guardians attend SAT workshop
Over 100 parents and guardians attended the CHS Guidance Department's Quantum Test Prep presentation on the Re-designed SAT and PSAT last Thursday in the CHS Library. Another 60 attended the MEFA/Financial Aid Workshop earlier in the evening.
If you were not able to attend the Quantum Test Prep presentation, we are going to email the PowerPoint to all parents. Additionally, keep an eye out for some in-house SAT test prep sessions to prepare students for the Nov. 7 SAT administration. Finally, with the many changes in the SAT, we are strongly encouraging our students to consider taking the ACT. As you discuss college planning with the Guidance Department, ask about the ACT. PISA
Last Wednesday's PISA administration went extremely well, and CHS is very thankful for the great support and effort put into this international exam. 37 CHS students, who were randomly selected, took the assessment, which involved interactive authentic problem-solving and critical-thinking tasks. The assessment was completed entirely on a laptop provided by PISA, and every student took a different exam. Over 70 countries take part in PISA and there were 390 versions of the assessment.
Our students were awesome! They were very focused and engaged in their work and they reported that they really enjoyed the experience. Most reported that they liked using the laptops and the interactive tasks. "They gave us real-life problems and you had to think a lot. It was good," one student said. Of the 37 students, 9 came back in the afternoon to take a financial literacy exam.
In the coming months, Canton High School will receive our school-wide results back and we will be able to compare our performance to other schools in the United States and around the world. It was an honor to be involved in this process and it was even better to receive the following note from the PISA site coordinator:
Canton High School,
My PISA team and I would like to thank you, your staff, and the students for a very enjoyable and successful day at your school. I would like to also express my sincere gratitude to Superintendent Jen Henderson for her support throughout the process.
As I mentioned earlier, your students served as good ambassadors for your school district and for other students their age throughout the United States.
It was truly a pleasure to meet and work with you on this project. Best wishes for a wonderful school year.

The Canton High School Library is open from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Thursday. We also have two staff members available in the library during this time for academic support. We hope that students take advantage of this space and support.

What do CHS students do
on a weekend in October?
Leadership and Service
The Canton High School mission calls for learning outside the classroom and the Canton Public School vision calls for students to become "competent and creative thinkers,
curious and confident learners, and compassionate citizens." These hopes and goals were on display this weekend as CHS students participated in several leadership service events.
Norfolk County District Attorney's Leadership Conference at Gillette Stadium
10 student leaders from the Canton Character Crew, a new club that is looking to enhance school spirit, academic achievement and character building, attended the District Attorney's Leadership Conference on Sunday. Character Crew Advisor and Wellness Teacher Ryan Gordy and Senior Class Advisor and SADD Advisor Heather Sullivan coordinated the trip. As the sign reads, "Canton stands as "1" against substance abuse."
Breast Cancer Walk / Alzheimer's Walk
Over 100 students participated in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk on Sunday and the Alzheimer's Walk on Saturday. Community service is a big part of Canton High School's culture and Mr. Amico did a great job coordinating both events. Below are pictures of some of the students who participated.

Important questions for students:
1. "Are you working as hard as you can?"
2. "Are you seeking out help from your teachers and your classmates as way to improve?"
3. "Do you have good routines to get your academic work completed in a thoughtful way?"
4. "How can we help you?"

Additionally, I am providing a link about Lengendary sporstwriter Bob Ryan, who has written a new book: Scribe: My Life in Sports. He will be visiting the Canton Library on Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. As a journalism major, I have read Bob Ryan faithfully since high school; he is an important voice in our era. Two friends of mine attended this talk at a Plainville bookstore, and they said his sport stories and his insight are priceless. With our focus on literacy and reading, I wanted to promote this unique opportunity. I would love to attend this event, but our girls and boys soccer teams are playing at Gillette Stadium on this night. Another amazing and unique opportunity.
Cinderella Drama Club trip / Thank You Rodman Family!
The Rodman family often makes generous donations, especially in the area of performing arts. On Thursday, Oct. 1, they sent 20 students and staff to see Cinderella. The family often buys and donates blocks of tickets for two to three productions a year. The Drama Club and CHS (as a whole) is so grateful for these wonderful experiences.
Stay tuned for Don Rodman's new book, inspired by the Rodman Ride for Kids, about the importance of giving back.

Bulldogs vs. Panthers at the Providence College Rink
Canton's Kevin Rooney has been named one of the captains for the defending national champion Providence Friars men's hockey team. Here is a link to the story: Canton's Rooney named captain.
There is an additional connection to Providence College this year. After our Ponky Rink collapsed earlier this year, Providence College men's hockey representatives (many with Canton connections) reached out to our coach Brian Shuman and our CHS athletic department. They offered the PC rink for a home game....Fast forward...The Canton Bulldogs will be playing Hockomock rival Franklin at the Providence College rink on Dec. 18. Get your popcorn ready.
German Exchange Students have arrived
Our friends from Bocholt, Germany arrived safely at Logan Airport on Saturday. They are getting settled with their host families today and will visit the State House on Monday. On Tuesday, they will meet at CHS and start shadowing some of our students and your classes.
CHS Soccer Teams at Gillette Stadium
Our boys and girls soccer teams will be playing Mansfield this Wednesday at Gillette Stadium. Just an amazing experience for our soccer programs, our student-athletes and our fans. For the last couple of years, Gillette has offered opportunities for high school teams (usually soccer and lacrosse) to play at the stadium. The Mansfield and Canton Athletic Departments worked hard to make this happen. See Danny Erickson if you would like to buy tickets and support the Bulldogs. For more details, see the Canton Athletics Blog. Follow @cantonathletics

Breakfast Reaches 100
We reached a milestone this week....I forget which day it was, but we had 101 students buy breakfast! It's the first time we topped 100. In the early days, we we were always hoping to get 35. I'm so happy many of our students are taking advantage of this opportunity. Food Service Director Martha Lawless and CHS director Donna Scott do a wonderful job preparing our students for the day. National Merit Scholarship
Commended Students Honored
Canton High School is pleased to announce that seven (7) CHS seniors have been named Commended Students in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended Students placed in the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2016 program by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
The following seniors received this recognition this month and will be honored at the CHS Scholastic Honors Night in May: Rigel Galgana, Isabel Johnson, Brendan Mullaley, Ngoc-Tran Nguyen, Lucas Phan, Courtland Priest and Catherine Song.
These CHS students exemplify our values of academic excellence and continuous improvement. They earned this distinction by working extremely hard and dedicating themselves to both the academic and extracurricular offerings at Canton High School. I’m very proud of them and our staff. They are terrific students and great representatives our school community.
“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” said a spokesperson for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

Cultivating Creativity!
Special Art Show: April 11, 10 am to 3 pm, Pequitside Farm
At times, challenges can open a new door, a new opportunity. Cultivating Creativity is a perfect example. Due to the high volume of snow, Artists in Bloom -- a very successful connection between Canton student arts and community members -- had to be canceled. But the K-12 Visual Arts Department told the students (whose artwork was selected) that their art would be displayed in a special event -- and Cultivating Creativity was born. The art show will feature selected work from:
1 student from each elementary classroom in each school
2 students from each GMS art class
Curricular examples from each studio area at CHS
Approximately 180-200 artworks from grades 1-12 will be on display. Additionally, the students wrote about their artwork and the writing is exhibited with their pieces.
If you have a moment, stop by and see the work of our talented students.
