Follow @CantonHSnews

Monthly Parent Meeting - Monday, March 31

The Monthly Parent Meeting will be held on Monday, March 31 at 6 p.m. in the CHS Library. All are welcome. Topics will include BYOD technology integration, Canton Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition information, and course selection feedback.

Term 3 ends on Friday, April 4

Friday, April 4 marks the final day of Term 3. As I noted in last week's blog, it is a school-community effort to help the students Finish Strong. It really comes down to a strong work ethic, focus and time on academics and good communication. Staying after for extra help, utilizing the library during and after school, and talking with your teacher about your current standing will pay dividends.

The start of Term 4 is a time of transition.

It is exciting time for seniors as they begin their final term of high school and look forward to senior activities and graduation on Friday, June 6. Many seniors will be starting their Senior Externships on Monday, April 7 and leaving the CHS campus for a full-time, real-world experience. Just an amazing opportunity. Additionally, the 19 students participating in the 36th German Exchange will heading to Bocholt, German on April 16 for an extraordinary experience.

MCAS: Grade 10 Math, Grade 9 Science

For parents of Grade 10 and Grade 9 students, just quick reminder of the upcoming MCAS exam dates.

Course selection and verification sheets

Thank you for helping make course selection a success. It is our hope that our 2014-15 Program of Studies offered a comprehensive set of courses that were foundational, aspirational and inspirational. The CHS staff spends countless hours reviewing curriculum and programming to make sure the classes provide a relevant and exciting learning experience for students.

Verification sheets (a record of what you requested) will be sent to you in early April. If you have any questions or concerns regarding course selection, please contact the Guidance Office.

Parent meeting for London/Paris trip

There will be a parent informational meeting on Tuesday, March 25 at 6:30 pm in the CHS library regarding the trip to London and Paris for eligible juniors and seniors scheduled for the 2015 April vacation. Please contact Katherine Swanson, K-12 Wellness Coordinator at swansonk@cantonma.org for more information.

MCAS: ELA complete, Math and Science up next

Kudos to Canton High School's sophomores for their superb effort on last week's English Language Arts (ELA) MCAS exam. The exam consisted of a long composition and three sessions of reading and writing that spanned three days.

If engagement, thinking and attention to detail are true indicators, our sophomores will once again shine on this state-wide exam.

(If your son or daughter needs to make-up an MCAS session, he or she will do so on Monday, March 24 or Wednesday, March 26)

So what's next?

Math MCAS -- Grade 10
Grade 10 students will take the Mathematics MCAS exam on Tuesday, May 13 and Wednesday, May 14.

Biology MCAS -- Grade 9
Grade 9 students will take the Biology MCAS exam on Monday, June 2 and Tuesday, June 3.

Course selection begins on Wed, March 26

For students in Grades 9, 10, and 11...
Course selection for the 2014-15 school year will be conducted on Wednesday, March 26. Throughout the day, students will meet with their teachers during class to select courses for next year.   As noted on the selection sheets, students will recommend courses and levels and initial the sheet.

Students will then take the sheet home on March 26 to review with their parents, make final "informed decisions" about next year's courses and levels and have their parents sign the sheet.
Please weigh heavily the teacher recommendation. On Thursday, March 27, students will complete their sheet with their "drop period" and turn in the sheet to the teacher.

Parents will receive a verification sheet in April.

Very important: Students MUST bring signed course selection sheets back to school on Thursday, March 27.

For students in Grade 8...
Current 8th graders will conduct a similar process on Monday, March 24 and Tuesday, March 25. CHS Guidance Director Dan Rubin and the Galvin Middle School staff will oversee this process.

Good Luck to the CHS Cheerleaders at Nationals!

From the Canton High School Athletic blog:
Congratulations go out to the CHS Winter Cheer team who will be heading to Orlando, Florida on Friday, March 28 to compete in the US Spirit National Championships. This marks the first time this century that the Bulldogs have performed well enough to earn an invitation to this elite competition.

The team qualified as a result of an exceptional routine at the State Competition that earned the Bulldogs a 3rd place finish.

The team has had an amazing year, earning Sectional Championships in both the fall and winter seasons. BulldogNation is very proud!

2. Are you completing ALL your assignments to the best of your ability?
3. Have you completed all of your make-up work?
4. Are you working as hard as you can?
5. Are you seeing your teaching for extra-help and support?
6. Are you utilizing the Afterschool Academic Support Center in the Library?

Parents -- Need a resource to support your son or daughter.? Check out Khan Academy for high-quality online videos to support hundreds of skills in various discipline areas. THIS WEEK AT CHS (MARCH 17-21)

Grade 10 MCAS exams begin this week

Canton High School sophomores are ready to excel on this year's MCAS English Language Arts exam this week. Building on a terrific foundation from the past, and after rigorous preparation this year, our Grade 10 students are prepared to demonstrate their reading and writing skills at a high level. CHS annually performs well on the MCAS ELA exam and I'm expecting even better results this year.

Knowing that our sophomores need rest and time to focus on the MCAS exams, sophomores will have no tests or homework during the MCAS exam period. An important note: Once the students start the exam, Grade 10 dismissals are not allowed. Students must work on the exam continuously and complete the exam on the day it was started.

Monday, March 17           MCAS assembly
Tuesday, March 18           Composition
Wednesday, March 19      Session 1 and 2 (Reading and
                                            Literary Analysis)
Friday, March 21              Session 3 (Reading and
                                            Literary Analysis)

Attendance each day is very important.

As always, the Canton High School staff and administration offer these reminders for success:

  • Work hard and do the best you can on the exam
  • Enter the exam rested and knowing that you are prepared
  • Eat a good breakfast on the day of the exams (Remember, CHS serves breakfast everyday for $1.50)
  • Work diligently and at a pace that works for you. You have unlimited time until the end of the school day to complete the exam. No need to rush.
  • Strive to achieve advanced or proficient on the exam. Push yourself to exceed expectations.
  • Demonstrate strong writing on the composition and on every open response. The writing portions make all the difference.
  • Read the passages actively and use good strategies to determine the answer. ALWAYS look back in the text to find the answer or at least clues for the answer.
  • Know your literary terms and elements
  • On the day of the Composition, you should have a book or two in mind that you can apply to the prompt.
  • Strive for greatness on the Open Responses. Make your claims (answers) and provide great support/evidence for your answers.
  • Know that you have the support of the entire Canton Community.
  • Embrace the opportunity to be great!
