Canton High School Showcase!

First-ever CHS Extra-curricular and Athletics expo set for Wednesday, October 23, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Dear Parents/Guardians of CHS 9th graders and Middle Schoolers,

Our students and staff are so excited to present the Canton High School Showcase on Wednesday night (Oct. 23), from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Canton High School. This tremendous expo of CHS athletic teams, extracurricular clubs and arts programs will provide our 9th graders and Galvin Middle Schoolers with many opportunities to get involved and ignite an interest.

Display tables will be in the gymnasium, providing you and your sons/daughters a chance to talk to team captains and coaches and to meet advisors and club leaders. I'm certain you will see great passion and Bulldog pride.

Link Leaders, meanwhile, will conduct tours of the building. Members of the Jazz Ensemble will be playing and some of our fine chorus members will be on display.

Big Prize! ... Students who attend will be entered into a raffle for a Reebok design card. The winner will design his or her own shoe in conjunction with Reebok. The prize is valued at $140. We also will have Canton High School blankets, donated by Draper Mills.

Finally, all students who attend will receive a Showcase Ticket, providing them a free one-game admission into a Canton athletic event or performing arts program.

What a great night! The Canton High School Showcase and the Boston Red Sox in the World Series!

We hope you can make it. If you have any questions, please contact me at foland@cantonma.org

Learning at Canton High School

CHS Cable TV and Canton Community Television celebrate

30-year partnership, student achievement, and camera upgrades

The television studio is chaotic and intense. The students from Mr. McDonough's Television Production class are prepping for an upcoming shoot of the Superintendent's Corner, and the level of focus and professionalism is astounding.

The students talk to one another through their headsets, barking instructions to check volume levels, camera angles, and the "white balance." Mr. McDonough watches their work from afar, as he has trained and taught them to run the show themselves. There are some skilled leaders in this groups, and soon they will prepping their host, Superintendent Jeff Granatino, and his guests, teachers Marty Badoian and Nathan Walkowicz,

The CHS television studio and the television classes have a long-standing tradition of excellence at Canton High School, and this show's prep just underscores the great learning experiences that students enjoy in a non-traditional classroom. The authentic learning challenges them to be creative and problem solve, communicate and collaborate with peers, and master the technical skills required for television production.

Thank you to Mr. McDonough and Canton Community Television for creating a great learning environment for our students! The following photos were taken during the show prep and the article below covers the CHS-Canton Community Television partnership and this year's high definition camera upgrades.

From the Canton Citizen
CHS Cable TV and Canton Community Television celebrated a successful and productive 30-year partnership. CCTV recently re-powered a state-of-the-art studio at CHS and provides high-end professional equipment at no cost to the Canton Public Schools to broadcast from the high school TV studio.
At Thursday night’s meeting, committee members heard presentations from TV production students Matt Chamberlain and Mia Tess, teacher and CPS Cable Access Coordinator Ed McDonough, and CCTV President Joe Donnelly, and McDonough thanked Donnelly and longtime station manager Tanya Willow for their many years of support. CCTV has also provided various training opportunities, bringing in professional cable technicians from TD Boston Garden as well as NESN cameraman and Canton native Bill Titus and professional engineer David Wells.
Tess told the committee that recent CHS graduates Greg Chamberlain, Haylee Russman, Jon and Lauren Cortizo, and Jack McNamara are all employed in the media. McNamara, who works for ESPN, was nominated for an Emmy Award. Jon Cortizo, who earned a student Emmy for cinematography, works as an assistant cameraman for the television show “The Good Wife” on CBS.
Donnelly told the committee how proud the station is to invest in the youth of Canton. “We recognize the impact of how it promotes student learning and that it has become part of the fabric of the entire Canton community,” he said. “It is our intent to support this program for many years to come.”
School Superintendent Jeff Granatino said, “The generosity of the entire CCTV team has been instrumental in making our television production program one of the strongest in the commonwealth. They are providing our students with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, which allow them to gain skills they will use when they enter the field of communications. Our students have gained national recognition for their work in this area, and a large part of that, beyond the great work of Mr. McDonough, is because of the successful partnership we have forged with CCTV over the years.”

CHS students named Commended Merit Scholars

Congratulations to seniors Dan Bronstein, Elizabeth Crespi, Amberly Diep, Pranathi Ganni, Felicia Lee for being named Commended Merit Scholars in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. The five CHS students will receive a letter of commendation from Canton High School and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) for their achievement at the Awards Night in May.

About 34,000 commended students throughout the nation are being recognized throughout the nation for their exceptional academic promise. Commended students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered in the 2014 competition by taking the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

"The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success," stated the NMSC. "These students represent a valuable national resource. Recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their school plays in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success."

PSATs on Saturday, Oct. 19

The PSATs will be given to all interested students on Saturday morning, October 19. The PSAT is a practice college entrance exam taken by 95% of all college-bound juniors in the country.

Participating in the PSAT gives students valuable feedback about their academic performance, a practice experience with a college entrance exam, and specific targeted areas for improvement in advance of the SAT. Students can still register in the CHS Guidance office up through Friday, October 18. The cost is $30.

Friends of Rachel

Moved and motivated, CHS students meet to form club to expand the goals set forth by Rachel's Challenge

Look for the Best in Others. Dream Big. Choose Positive Influences. Speak with Kindness.

Start your Own Chain Reaction.

These are Rachel's Challenges, the powerful and emotional call to action from last week's presentation. The CHS student body connected with these challenges and 46 students met with presenter Cody Hodges to brainstorm ways to carry out this message and impact the school culture in a positive way.

Another 25 students met on Tuesday afternoon to formally start the Friends of Rachel club and start their own Chain Reaction. Guidance Director Dan Rubin, guidance counselor Lauren Dellelo and teacher Tina Hayes will serve as advisors for the club.

Thank you to K-12 Wellness Coordinator Katey Swanson, Assistant Principal Hank McDeed, Dean of Students Jim Goff, and secretaries Maureen Dickie and Heather Sullivan for coordinating the event. A big thank you to It's Too Cool for allowing CHS to use its screen for the assembly. Kudos to Jim Duncan (technology) and the custodial/facility staff for the set up.

What an amazing event!

Hundreds of students have been signing the "I Accept Rachel's Challenge" banner at lunch. See below.

German Students Arrive in Canton

Storied Exchange program in its 36th year

A tremendous tradition will be renewed on Wednesday (10/16) as 25 German Exchange students arrive in Canton for the 36th German-Canton High School Exchange. The students will stay with host families through November 6, and they will experience life at Canton High School and visit many sites in the area.

The German students, all juniors, will be accompanied by two teachers -- Monika Wobben (Dutch language and history) and Ann-Katrin Schneider (history and Prot. religion). Both are also certified to teach English. Ms. Wobben has been here twice before, while Ms. Schneider is on her first exchange.

The 36-year exchange allows CHS students and the German students to experience one another's culture, build international relationships and develop a global perspective that is essential in today's 21st century schools. And, of course, they have a ton of fun as well.

The German students will visit Plimoth Plantation, the Mayflower, Boston, New York City, the Museum of Science, and the Statehouse, while also taking in a Celtics game, a Halloween party and classes/events at CHS. In April, a group of CHS students will visit Germany.

CHS welcomes its friends from Germany!
